Where Can I Serve?

Jesus told us, his disciples, to make disciples of all nations. One of the most important values of Bishop United Methodist Church is our mission to our community and the world. Members of the congregation are involved in a variety of ministries from things as simple as restocking supplies, to assembling the church mailings and bulletins, to feeding the hungry by serving in the Soup Kitchen, and by praying for those in need.  Below are a few of the ways you might be able to serve.

Mission/Sending Ministries

This ministry supports United Methodist Social Services which include the Friendship Center-Providing respite care for those struggling with Alzheimer’s and dementia, Soup Kitchen-Providing nourishment for the body and the spirit, Spirit of Recovery-Providing support and spiritual counsel for those recovering from addiction and Project for Independent Living-Providing resources for independent living for those with disabilities.

Sending Ministries also supports Alternative Christmas, Heifer International, NothingButNets, UMCOR, Angel Tree, and the missionary photojournalist Paul Jeffery.

Music

Join others in glorying God through their voices, the playing of handbells, and other special music. The choir rehearses at 7 pm on Wednesdays, and there are two bell choirs — The Hosanna Handbells with practice at 4 pm on Wednesdays, and a Children’s Chimes Choir.

Ushers/Greeters
The usher team at Bishop UMC fills an important role that includes welcoming our guests, ensuring the safety of the building during services, guiding traffic, answering questions, providing direction, unlocking doors, locking doors, and generally ensuring that the service can proceed problem-free. The ushers/greeters are a servant-hearted group of men and women whose ministry is integral to church life.

Media & Technology
Opportunities to serve exist from helping in the media room at worship to assist in making sure people can hear worship to making a copy for those who can’t attend.  These volunteers are crucial to having a vital worship.  If you have gifts in this area please consider this as a way to serve your church and God.

Prayer Chain

Prayer cannot be overestimated. Prayer moves the hand of God. Bishop UMC is a body of believers dependent upon prayer. Throughout the week, volunteers in our Prayer Chain team, pray for their pastor and church, a list of church members, any special requests, and missionary prayer needs.

Sunday School

In order to give our children the best Bible teaching possible, Bishop UMC offers children’s Sunday School in conjunction with the main service. This special time gives kids more opportunity for interaction and learning in a context and manner that may be better suited to their age and learning styles. This is not possible without our dedicated volunteer teachers — perhaps this is an area where you have the gifts to serve.
