October Sermon Series – “Called to Be Saints”

In many of the Apostle Paul’s letters, he begins by addressing the faith community as those who are “called to be saints.” We, as members of the Body of Christ, are called to be saints, as well! This sermon series uses the wisdom of Scripture and the example of historic and local Eastern Sierra saints to inspire us on our own journeys of discipleship. Please share with the pastors your stories of the local saints who helped build our community of faith! This week, we are studying how “Saints Rejoice in the Lord” with Philippians 4: 1-9.
This week, we will enjoy special music from the Chancel Choir and our organist, Bill Schuck.  (Please see the full series below.)

Faith in Action Sunday – October 22, 2017

Faith that Works

On “Faith in Action Sunday,” Oct. 22, 2017, at 9:30 am, we will share short time of devotion followed by service projects in Bishop and Independence. At 4:00 pm, we will share worship and celebration in Big Pine, followed by a potluck dinner. The main dish will be provided, but if able, please bring a side dish or dessert to share. All are welcome! For more information, click here: Faith in Action Info.
Be sure to sign up for your favorite service project starting October 1st during worship or in the Church Office.

Disaster Relief through UMCOR

Thank you for your generosity to United Methodist Committee on Relief’s efforts in areas effected by recent hurricanes and wildfires. Together, we have raised $1,703!
Of course, there is still more work to do, both in the U.S. and abroad. Here are a few ways you can help:

Bible Study

Starting the week of October 8, we will have a four-week long “covenant group” that will use Chris Folmsbee’s book, The Wesley Challenge: 21 Days to a More Authentic Faith, as a resource for asking deep questions and growing in our faith. This study will inspire us to make discipleship a habit with the use of daily spiritual disciplines, as we grow in love of God, self, and others, and meet together to encourage and support one another along the way. Sessions will also include videos by the author to enhance our discussion.

Advent / Christmas Devotion Books

Each year, the Eastern Sierra Shared Ministry works together to create and enjoy a book of Advent and Christmas devotions. It is always a blessing to learn and grow together by sharing our experiences and reflections in this way! Please consider submitting a short devotion for the book. (Due Sunday, Nov. 5.) Samples from last year are available, and a writing workshop will be held on Tuesday, October 3, at Noon in the Bishop UMC Adult Lounge (in lieu of Bible Study). Sign-ups will be available beginning Sunday, October 1, after worship in the Fellowship Hall. To learn more, please talk with the Pastors.
